Remembrance Card, Sgt. Roland Dehase, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, DOW August 28, 1944, Normandy
Rare genuine WWII Canadian remembrance card, dedicated to Sergeant Roland P. Dehase.
The tradition of editing a 'death card' in memory of a serviceman who gave his life for his country dates back to the Great War. Just a few dozen of copies were generally printed by the family, being intended for relatives and close friends of the deceased only.
Apart from the latter's portrait, rank, name, age, and origin, the front of the document indicates his date and place of death. The reverse usually bears some prayers, Catholic in the present case.
Excellent overall condition. Dimensions: 2.4in x 4.2in.
Roland Philip Dehase was born on August 23, 1920 in a French-speaking family of Brussels, Manitoba -- a small rural community founded by Belgian emigrants in 1892 -- and volunteered in the Canadian Army on July 4, 1940 in Montreal, Quebec. He went on to serve with the 1st Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada (ASN D82507), which landed in Normandy on July 6, 1944 as part of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. He was wounded in action by shrapnel on August 26 and died of his wounds two days later. His body is now at rest in the Canadian War Cemetery at Bretteville-sur-Laize, Calvados.
