Overshoes, Hood Rubber Co., 1942, FSSF & Battle of the Bulge
Nice pair of genuine WWII US Army flexible rubber sole and rubberized cotton uppers overshoes, closing by four spring-loaded hooks with flat buckles. Manufactured by the famous Hood Rubber Co. and dated 1942. Soles bear mention Made in US of America. Size 8.
This type was issued to the First Special Service Force in Italy and in the French Alps, prior to being widely worn by US troops in the Battle of the Bulge, which was fought in the appalling December 1944 / January 1945 winter conditions.
Very good overall condition.
Early in WW2, the US Army saw the need for cold weather foot wear that could be worn in wet conditions. The overshoes were prized for wear in winter or colder spring and fall conditions, in either mud or slush. We have shown a photo of US troops in the Battle of the Bulge, the troopers can be seen wearing the four buckle winter overshoes. A second photo shows the FSSF also wearing M-44 overshoes.
