In August 1914, a handful of Czech and Slovak volunteers, hostile to the Austra-Hungarian Empire, under the control of which their respective territories were, joined the French Foreign Legion. In 1917-1918, the 21e and 22e Régiments de chasseurs were created and soon gathered within the 1ère Brigade d'infanterie tchécoslovaque, which comprised some 9,600 troops. During the summer and fall of 1918, the unit deployed to Alsace, prior to fighting in the Aisne, Marne and Ardennes sectors, sustaining about 650 fatal casualties.
