Genuine WWII German gas mask canister of the large type (10.9in), featuring a custom-made canvas cover showing remnants of Feldgrau paint. The canister latch (dated 1943) and the hinge of the lid are in working order.
This canister is in quite good, used condition. Some inscription has been engraved on the compartment intended for spare lenses -- though hardly legible, it seems to correspond to name and rank MULLER SS STUBAF followed by mention ᛋᛋ PZ BTL 12. The only individual who matches the above-mentioned information is ᛋᛋ-Sturmbannführer Siegfried Müller, commanding officer of ᛋᛋ-Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 12, 12. ᛋᛋ-Panzerdivision „Hitlerjugend“.
He was born on October 18, 1914 in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia and participated in the Battle of France in 1940 prior to being deployed on the Eastern Front with ᛋᛋ-Pionier-Bataillon, ᛋᛋ-Division „Totenkopf“ from April 1941 to May 1943. He was later promoted to the rank of ᛋᛋ-Sturmbannführer and appointed commanding officer of ᛋᛋ-Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 12. This unit first saw action against the Canadians in the night of June 9-10, 1944 at Norrey-en-Bessin and sustained heavy casualties during the Battle of Normandy. Siegfried Müller passed away on April 7, 1974.
The present artifact comes from a significant collection built up by a Norman collector in the last thirty years -- most of the items were found in the vicinity of the Falaise Gap.
