Shell, Bomb, Aerial, Fragmentation, German, SD 2 (Butterfly Bomb)
Rare genuine WWII German anti-personnel Sprengbombe Dickwandig 2 kg bomblet outer shell, commonly referred to as SD 2 or 'butterfly bomb'.
Made up of a cast iron cylindrical outer shell designed for carrying an explosive charge, this device was intended for being dropped in groups of several dozens by Luftwaffe fighter-bombers -- some of the containers could carry over one hundred of these submunitions.
Once the container burst open, the cluster of bomblets spread out and each shell opened its 'wings' like a butterfly, thus arming the projectile (not provided here) prior to dropping it.
Good overall condition; retains its spindle.
Dimensions: about 3.4in x 4in.
Please note that the present sale only includes the cylindrical shell, which is totally inert and doesn't feature any pyrotechnic device.
