

Rare genuine WWII German photograph showing elements of the 5. ᛋᛋ-Panzerdivision „Wiking“ on the Eastern Front in July 1942.
The present picture, taken by war correspondent Altstadt, shows a one-man MG 34 crew in a foxhole, watching the horizon through binoculars; grenades, ammunition cases of the aluminium type, and a spare barrel container have been placed all around.
The reverse of the photo bears the following caption, typewritten in German: Mit Mg, Pistole und Handgranaten bewaffnet, liegt dieser deutsch Vorposten hart am Feinde. Mit nieerlahmender Aufmerksamkeit musser ununterbrochen das feindliche Gelaende nach verdaechtigen Berwegungen absuchen. Seine Feststellugen sind für die naechsten Operationender Kameraden von grösster Wichtigkeit. ('Armed with machine gun, pistol and hand grenades, this German outpost is close to the enemy. With unflagging attention, the sentinel must constantly search the enemy's terrain for suspicious movements. His findings are of the utmost importance for the next operations of his comrades.')
