Cap, Visor, Officer, US Army, 1st Lt. Frank Uerling, 379th BS, 310th BG, 12th Air Force, USAAF, KIA March 30, 1945, Italy
Nice genuine WWII US Army officer's visor cap, Feather Weight type. Corresponds to size 6 ⅞.
Quite good, worn condition; retains its cap badge, leather chinstrap (damaged) and buttons. The lack of stiffener gives this hat a 'broken' shape quite popular in the Air Forces. Name Uerling F.G. and laundry number U-4442 are visible under the visor.
Frank Grimes Uerling was born on July 2, 1922 in Hastings, Nebraska and joined the Air Corps on June 17, 1942 (ASN 17097921). He earned his pilot's wings and an officer's commission in April 1944 (ASN O-774442) prior to being deployed to Europe with 379th Bomb. Squadron, 310th Bomb. Group, 12th Air Force in July of that year.
On March 30, 1945, he was the copilot of B-25J Mitchell #43-27571 She's Engaged, which was hit by Flak near Rovereto, Northern Italy -- 1st Lieutenant F.G. Uerling did bail out but his parachute may have failed and he was killed when he hit the ground. He had participated in 52 missions. His body was eventually repatriated in 1948.
