The standard service cap for most Army personnel featured a stiff leather visor and an internal wire frame for shape. However, aircrew members often removed the wire frame on lower-altitude flights to better fit their communications headsets. In response, manufacturers began producing caps without a frame and with single-ply leather visors, making them easier to stow. Known as "crusher caps" due to their flexibility, these caps became a status symbol and prized possession among airmen.
