Great genuine WWII US Army officer's visor cap, manufactured by Dobbs.
Size 7 ⅛.
Very good overall condition; retains its original stiffener, insignia, leather chinstrap, and buttons.
The name tag located inside indicates that the present hat once belonged to some Lieutenant Clarence Spottswood Towles, Jr., of the Army Air Corps.
Clarence Spottswood Towles, Jr. was born on February 15, 1918 in Reedville, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in May 1940 and began active duty in February 1941 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Corps. He then deployed to the Mediterranean with various bomber units and was successively promoted to the ranks of 1st Lieutenant, Captain, and Major, and soon assumed command of 668th Bomb. Squadron, 416th Bomb. Group, 9th Air Force in Europe.
In March 1944, he was appointed Assistant Operations Officer of 97th Bomb. Wing, prior to being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in July of that year. A recipient of many decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with eight Oeak Leaf Clusters, he passed away on December 3, 1948, following wounds received in the crash of a fighter jet near Albuquerque, New Mexico.
