Crash in Bayeux - The Last Flight of Sergeant Ferguson (English Version)
Book, Crash in Bayeux - The Last Flight of Sergeant Ferguson, François Oxéant, OREP, 2024, 112 pages. English version.
This is the true story of Sergeant William Kennedy Ferguson, a young Royal Canadian Air Force pilot whose Spitfire was shot down by Flak on January 15, 1943 near Bayeux, Normandy, France. Ferguson was killed and buried in the cemetery of a nearby village, Saint-Martin-des-Entrées. To show their solidarity with the cause for which he had died, hundreds of French citizens attended the funeral.
The German military authorities took this as a provocation and confiscated the ID of all those present, leading to an unprecedented wave of arrests; members of the French Resistance were subsequently sent to concentration camps, where some of them died of starvation.
This meticulous investigation depicts the life of this Canadian pilot in detail, until his very last sortie over German-occupied France, as well as the tragic consequences of his death for the local population.
Initially published by Comever-De Rameau in 2014, the present revised edition features some never-before-seen wartime photographs.
