Genuine WWII US Army Rangers shoulder sleeve insignia, as worn by troops of the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions on D-Day.
The 1st Ranger Battalion was created in the spring of 1942 and its recruits, mostly volunteers from the 34th Infantry Division, were subsequently sent to Scotland for being trained by the British commandos. On August 19 of that year, some fifty men participated in Operation Jubilee at Dieppe. The unit later deployed to North Africa and Italy along with the 3rd and 4th Ranger Battalions. Following the battle of Cisterna (January 1944), the survivors were transferred to the FSSF. The 29th Provisional Ranger Battalion was created in December 1942, prior to being disbanded in October 1943 so that the men could return to their original outfits with new skills.
On June 6, 1944, Companies D, E and F of the 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the cliff at Pointe du Hoc, while Companies A, B and C stormed Omaha Beach alongside the 5th Ranger Battalion.
