Rare genuine WWII US Army grouping, which belonged to some 1st Lieutenant Walter C. Shaw, 28th Signal Company, 28th Infantry Division and contains the following items:
- important corpus of original documents, including some personal correspondance (such as a greeting card co-signed by Major General Norman D. Cota, then commanding officer of the division), the telegram sent to his spouse by the military authorities to inform her of his wound received on January 12, 1945, his discharge issued on December 18 of that year, as well as many wartime newspaper clippings and various 28th Infantry Division publications;
- lot of 80 photographs -- original prints -- taken during his service in the US and in Europe.
- four medals: Purple Heart coming in its case along with ribbon bar and lapel badge; Bronze Star; WWII Victory Medal coming in its box with two ribbon bars; American Campaign Medal coming in its box along with a ribbon bar; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Star, coming in its box along with a ribbon bar;
- lot of various insignia -- a pair of 2nd Lieutenant rank insignia, a pair of 1st Lieutenant rank insignia, a pair of Signal Corps collar insignia (one of them being hallmarked Amcraft), and a 28th Infantry Division shoulder sleeve insignia (OD back).
A truly amazing, homogeneous set, in excellent overall condition.
Walter Chase Shaw was born on May 25, 1918 in Bristol, Rhode Island and joined the US Army on January 14, 1942 (ASN 31059601). He went on to serve with 28th Signal Company, 28th Infantry Division and deployed to Europe as a 2nd Lieutenant (officer's ASN O-1636640) from October 8, 1943. Participating in every campaign his unit was involved in, from Normandy to Germany through the Ardennes, he was wounded in the face by shrapnel on January 12, 1945 and was repatriated on August 2, prior to being discharged on December 18 as a 1st Lieutenant. He passed away in May 1970.
