Helmet, M1, Fixed Loops, Cpt. Charles Maus, Co. K, 116th Inf. Regt., 29th Infantry Division, D-Day, Omaha Beach, WIA, Normandy
Genuine WWII US Army M1 helmet, front seam and fixed loops, manufactured by McCord, shell number 135B. Original early canvas chinstrap with brass buckle and hook.
A Captain rank insignia has been welded on the front of the shell, under some painted 29th Infantry Division insignia -- partly faded. Name Maus has been painted in capital letters on the inner surface.
Comes with its original liner, manufactured by Westinghouse, retaining its khaki cotton web suspension and neckband, russet leather sweatband, OD-painted A washers, and leather chinstrap.
Very good, worn condition.
Charles Henry Maus was born on October 16, 1919 in Westminster, Maryland. A Corporal in the National Guard, he was inducted in Federal Service on February 3, 1941 (ASN 20342500). Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on February 3, 1943 (ASN O-2040749), he went on to serve with Company K, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division from June 1st, 1944 and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day.
One week later, Technical Sergeant Frank D. Peregory, serving under his orders, captured 35 German troops after killing another 8, in Grandcamp, Normandy, France -- killed in action on June 14, the latter was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for this heroic action.
Charles H. Maus was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 1st, 1944 and subsequently wounded by shrapnel on July 17. His name was eventually written off on November 18 and he was transferred to 110th Field Artiilery Battalion prior to being promoted to Captain in 1949. A recipient of the Silver Star, he passed away on June 22, 1967.
