Genuine WWII US Army M1 helmet, front seam and fixed loops, manufactured by McCord, shell number 108A. Original canvas chinstrap with steel buckle and hook.
A Major rank insignia has been painted on the front, on a square of green paint that barely covers up the Captain rank insignia which adorned the shell prior to its owner's promotion. Following the same logic, mention Major has been written on the inner surface but indication Capt. Baker, which had been painted in white, is still clearly visible.
Comes with its original liner, manufactured by Westinghouse, retaining its khaki cotton web suspension and neckband, russet leather sweatband, and plain A washers. Mention Capt. E.R. Baker, which had been written on the suspension, was also later 'amended' in order to materialize the promotion to Major. The outer surface shows a Major rank insignia, painted on the emplacement of the Captain bars which previously adorn the front.
Nice homogeneous set in good, worn condition.
