Grouping US Navy, S1c Spurgeon Aldinger, LST-1, D-Day, Normandy
Genuine WWII US Army M1928 haversack, manufactured by Crawford-Austin Mfg. Co. in Waco, Texas and dated 1942. Standard regulation type issued to most branches of service in various theaters of operations.
Complete with all original straps, meat can pouch and pack carrier manufactured by Boyt in 1942.
This haversack comes along with a genuine canvas cartridge belt, featuring ten compartments intended for M1903 Springfield ammunition clips, manufactured by Mills and dated July 1919. The latter retains an M1924 first-aid packet, manufactured by E.A. Brown and dated 1942.
Name Aldinger SM has been stenciled several times on the haversack, cartridge belt and first-aid packet. Rare homogenenous lot, in very good overall condition.
Spurgeon Millard Aldinger was born on March 21, 1912 in York, Pennsylvania and joined the US Navy on November 12, 1943 (service number 819-64-63). He went on to serve aboard LST-1 from March 12, 1944 onwards, right after the Anzio landings, and spent the rest of the war as part of this ship's crew, thus participating in the amphibious operations in Normandy on June 6, 1944. He was discharged on November 8, 1945 as a Seaman 1st Class and passed away on October 13, 1971.
